Hello everyone,
I have an issue with my 09 335i xDrive, AT (VIN: A407423)
Car cranks but does not fire.
Details:
Car is unmodified except for an ebay OCC.
Compression is 150 psi +/- 5psi across all cylinders
Confirmed fuel and spark by pulling and testing spark plugs, also found that they have fuel on them (Spark plugs are black and wet with fuel)
Car before timing was adjusted did not start (figured timing to be the problem as compression was 120 psi across all cylinders)
Timing was recently adjusted.
After timing was adjusted, car will still not start. (Compression was brought up to 150 psi)Procedure:
Set engine in TDC with special tool pin in flywheel
Loosened collar bolts holding intake and exhaust cam gear
Moved camshafts and aligned them with tool (both cams were behind about 1 or 2 teeth)
Replaced collar bolts and torqued to spec
Reinstalled valve cover, fuel rail, etc
Verified all connections with spark and fuel,
No codes being thrown in ISTA+ except for the ECU being unable to communicate with the transfer box.
Reset all adaptations in INPA.
All live data in INPA looks good when turning the engine over AFAIK.
Battery was replaced recently (old and new batteries were both lead acid)
Battery was registered but may not have been programmed properly for the different capacities? (Not sure)
HPFP and LPFP fuel pressure readings look good as well.
Checked oil filter and found no metal
At this point, i'm not sure whats next to check so I thought I'd make a post here. Any suggestions are welcome, this car has been a handful.
If more details are needed, please ask.
Thanks!
An engine needs 3 things to run: Spark, fuel and air. You seem to have verified 2 of those things, so that leaves the 3rd.
I'll be honest, if you've verified the timing and verified that it's getting spark, air, and fuel I'm stumped. It sounds like a HPFP to me, but that would not only throw a code (afaik), it wouldn't put any fuel on the spark plugs. When you put the car in "run" without pressing the clutch/brake so it doesn't try to start, do you hear the fuel pump kick on and pressurize?
You might also have better luck on a more active forum like e90post.com
See if car will start and run for a few seconds on starter fluid.
Timing is, by definition, not adjustable. If you managed to change it, then odds are good that you made a mess of things. I have been driving computer controlled cars since the inception. The computer can easily adjust for a degree or two, which is the most you would do if timing actually needed to be adjusted. The cpmputer needs to know where TDC is, and it gets this from the CPS. If the best place for the engine to run is 4 degrees before TDC, then the computer can make the adjustment, and if you move the sensor then the computer adjusts from the wrong location and you end up with it trying to operate the engine at 8 degrees before TDC, whatever.
