Has anyone replaced the compressor seals on an E30 M3 or other 3 series. Also what is the proper and safe long term way to convert to R134a or R12a equivalent.
I owned my M3 since new and it only has 43K miles on it. Last time I charged it with real R12 was about 4 years ago and it worked great on a 1000 mil trip when I moved to FL.
Recently I lost a $40 can of R12 as it leaked right out in a day. After that I pulled a vacuum on it and that was lost in a few minutes. I suspect the compressor seal is shot and I see replacements at: https://www.polarbearinc.com/PBPC/ho...ftSeals_1.html and https://www.autozone.com/cooling-hea...46284_284819_0
I think those seals have R134a safe O-rings and I plan to replace to seal and recharge with R12a replacement stuff. Do I also have to flush the oil out and replace that?
My M3 has a Behr 70 623 04 492 BMW # 64 52 1 377 947
Any help for a long term solution would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Great thread on R134 conversions: https://www.r3vlimited.com/board/for...iy#post9925935
I've had good success with drop-in R12 replacements like Enviro-Safe or Freeze-12, so I don't think there's a strong need to convert to R-134 anymore.
Also, you're probably better off using a gas sniffer to find the leak than you are in guessing that the compressor is the problem... although the compressor is likely the problem.
