I know it is not to be believed but my 2000 540IA actually has a 3.15 lsd from the factory. I am prepared to be called a liar. I am prepared to be told I do not have a clue. I am even prepared to be called names and swore at. However, all I ask is that you take my vin number and call any BMW dealer you like. Have them run it. On the build sheet it says shorter final drive. I even have a part number for it. I believe my car may be one of a kind. Anyway, here is my vin. WBADN6340YGM68024. And yes, I did buy the car used from a little old lady from Long Island New York.
So..... You want a lollipop or something?

...You realize a shorter final drive doesn't have to be an LSD right?
It's not one of a kind
Ah no big deal, it appears you got your hopes up but were mistaken.
On another note, When I had my 2001 Nissan Pathfinder LE, that had the LSD option (had the orange sticker and everything) which was just an extra few hundred dollars when new - but I thought it was no big deal. Then when I came into the BMW world, LSD's had a weird god-like mystical quality.....
You guys should have just bought Nissans, then your lives would be complete
How did you determine it has a LSD? Is there a large white "S" stamped on the diff housing?
The E39 used electronic diff control.
Ed in San Jose '97 540i 6 speed aspensilber over aubergine leather. Build date 3/97. Golden Gate Chapter BMW CCA Nr 62319.
Let's see a pic of the back of the diff showing the cooling fins on the back cover.
Ed, you talking about the DSC that the DME and ABS control?

Might be another few years before OPs posts again. 2 posts in 7 years?
Anyway... here is what a LSD would look like and I highly doubt the little old lady would swap out a M5 LSD for a fun.

If you can leave two black stripes from the exit of one corner to the braking zone of the next, you have enough horsepower. - Mark Donohue
^_LOL......
Even when I had a pegleg diff if both wheels had equal traction it would leave rubber from both wheels.
Aaaah....... Acid, I remember that stuff, sort of...

All automatics of that year came with 3.15 Rear Diff.

I pulled the build sheet, then pulled the part info.... and yep! It's a 3.15 shorter drive ratio.... open diff.
My 99 528iA does burnouts on two wheels, I have an LSD!

He's a noobie, guess we should cut him some slack so we don't scare him off.
Hey, noob or snoob, the way he came on here, you reap what you sow, even I’ve learned from that, then got it out of my head....

7 years is a newbie? So if one signed up when this forum 1st started and posted 3x, you'd still consider them a newbie?
7 years on, or yesterday, you never post, and when you do, you basically write "I'm a Noob" as your first post after 7 years, do the math....

I've got a 2000 540i M-Sport 6spd manual.
DSC off...I do 2 wheel burnouts.
Both rear Toyo Proxes are also evenly worn.
The fronts are almost full new tread, rears are way down.
Not saying I have an LSD...but odd.
Thoughts?
