    Considering Purchasing 08 X3 With 158k Questions

Hello, I am looking at an 08 X3 with 158k miles. It seems to run great with the exception of an idle issue immediately after start up. After starting the car it immediately revs the RPMs to about 2200 and then dips back down to 5-600 RPMs. It does this for about 15-20 seconds and then evens itself out. Roughly 1 out of 10 starts it dies when they dip back down. I took it to a local shop and they scanned it, the vehicle came back with an error code of PO365 CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR B CIRCUIT BANK 1.

So, having said all that does anybody here have any experience with this issue and based on that code do those symptoms seem to correlate with it?

Also, are there any other things (other than obvious oil leaks, water leaks, etc) I should look for that could cause problems with the vehicle?

I understand it has high miles and WILL have some maintenance issues, I am prepared for that (I think) and it is going to be my second vehicle. I would just hate to get stuck with something bad right out of the gate.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks and have a great weekend everybody!

    Love my 08 6 speed x3
BUT... from 150-212 thousand miles (where mine is at now) be prepared for you wallet to burst into flames unless you turn your own wrenches. Here is a partial list of BS. Starter, look it up. Complete nightmare. Vanos pass side so so. Drivers side nightmare. Transfer case. Make sure that you do not hear ANY clunking AT ALL. Electric water pump...just stops time for tow. Oil filter housing gasket. Oil pan leaks. Impossible to change without 10 hours labor. Time for struts and rear shocks. All end links and control arms. The list goes on. I have owned E30's, E39's and even a E60 M5. Never had a car so fragile that was so hard to work on.
But I still love it. Great interior, still looks brand new in and out. Best machine in the snow ever. (With snow tires of course) Great driving dynamics, lots of fun for an SAV. (Basically an E46.) If you can handle at least $2000/year to keep her going you will not be disappointed.

I think you can take the above (john) at his word for sure. I myself own the early model 05. But let me share this guys general account he approaches your request in a honest and sure footed way as well...

I have a 07 6 speed M package also and love the thing. Mines sitting at 162K and I agree that things are starting to need a thorough going through. I just had the transmission output shaft and main transfer case shaft shred each other to bits leaving me with no power. ended up pulling the trans out to replace the rear main seal, throw out bearing, clutch fork, pivot pin, shifter seal, shifter bushings, output shaft, output shaft seal, transfer case bearings, transfer case seals, transfer case chain, and finally the transfer case main shaft. All in all about $1200 in parts. Would have done the clutch and flywheel for another $800 but it had been replaced at some point and still had tons of life.

Still have, oil pan gasket, drivers door speaker and windshield replacement to take care of this year.
