INPA Error "IFH0009: No Control From Response Unit"

    Hi all,
Background: So my clock spring went bad and tripped the airbag light. I am trying to reset it with INPA. I installed Mike's INPA package onto my Windows 10 64-bit Laptop. I also am using my K/DCAN cable I procured from ebay. I had to solder pins 7 and 8 in the cable for it to work. I have used this cable to code with NCS Expert in the past (successfully), and to read+clear basic error codes in the engine module (S54) of INPA.

Problem: When I try to select the airbag module, I get "IFH0009: No Control From Response Unit" error message, which does not allow me into the airbag module.

From my research, it seems this could be a few different causes:

    • Wrong/Bad Cable
    • A certain file in a certain directory is populated when it shouldn't be?
    • Incomplete/Improper EDIABAS
    • Bad INPA installation
    • Wrong properties in device manager (Should be COM1 and 1ms latency)
    • Car doesn't have a readable airbag module (then how would I clear the light?)

The "USB Serial Port" properties in device manager are setup as COM1 and 1ms latency as almost all directions state. I've tried multiple INPA installations with same problem, but I won't rule out this possible cause. Car build date is June of 2001. There is not a round cable port under the hood (I know this question will come up).

Just seems weird that some modules work just fine and some others don't at all.

    Thanks in advance.

SOLVED: I found out that my solder joint between pins 7 + 8 was bad. I re-soldered, and INPA works 100%.

The com port setting can be any com port as long as it matches the com port setting in the OBD.ini file. I've seen cables use different com ports if you plug it into different usb ports. When I installed INPA on my windows 10 laptop the default com port in the obd.ini file was com 9.

I believe your error was actually "no response from control unit"

I was getting this error and I got it randomly. I had two connectors, a K-DCAN and a BMW Scan 1.4.0 that have both worked for me in the past but lately their function would be hit or miss. I began to wonder if I had a k-wire break or something like that. Out of desperation I plugged the pac-man connector (this is what i use on my 2000 z3) all the way in to the connector, which I normally don't do because it is a pain to pull back out, and that solved my problem.
