Advice on timing tools for S54 engine

Hello all- I need to check the timing on my S54 and there is apparently two different tools- BMW # 119-140 (Camshaft Alignment Gauge) and 119-130 (Camshaft Alignment Tool) - that appear to serve the same function. The former is still available, the latter is not. #119-130 is labeled #1 and #119-140 is labeled #2 below. Does anyone know if you can just use 119-130 to time the cams?

Did you mean the latter is available? 130 is available, that is what you need to use (item #1 in your pic).

That said, to check timing you also need #5 to lock the crank at TDC for cyl #1.

Yes, I mixed that up-140 is not available except in kits and are not BMW parts. I don't trust the knock-off kits.

Tool ending 130 is what you need. And only ONE pin that comes with the tool. You also need the TDC locking pin.

Like suggested some places do not get another pin and insert them both. They will get seized in there.

The BMW TIS procedure does show both tools. But it's always been unclear to me what the exact difference it between tool -130 and -140.

Having said that. TIS shows -140 to check the current timing on the "Checking timing of camshafts" procedure. And when this needs to be adjusted, the "Adjusting timing of camshafts" procedure shows the -130 tool.

But the pin itself seems to be in the same position on both.

DO NOT use the aftermarket tools. I used an aftermarket tool and my timing was off. I then purchased the OEM tool and it was spot on.

BTW, I have a OEM tool for rent.

There’s plenty of people using these, although one aftermarket set doesn’t equal the other.

But unless they are way off, they should do the job.

The OEM tools are obviously favorable, but a totally different price.

I'm just speaking from experience. This was the kit I purchased (and returned) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

That kit seems identical to all kits sold on Ebay/Amazon/etc.

Some just have a different color anodizing.
