    E36 rpm drop

Hi guys, I'm new here and I have a concerning problem. my 328i automatic under full acceleration in 3rd gear it will climb the rpms just fine then gets past 4,500 it drops down to 4000 rpms real slow and then starts climbing again. While all this is happening it is still accelerating at a pretty constant speed. This happened while going up an incline just in case that makes a difference. Some guys told me it was normal but no other car I drove did this .

Yeah, after 3rd gear it will shift into 4th gear, so it sounds normal. Why do you think this is an issue? did you not know it has 4 gears?

Or torque converter locking up as it's supposed to and yes all automatics do that.

Why would 4th gear engage at only 4,500 rpm if I'm at full throttle and if so why is there only a 500 rpm difference between the 2 gears.

Well the computer decides when to shift, it won't necessarily redline each gear.

If you want to have a little more umph try D3, that is sport mode but it won't shift into 4th. Let go of the gas and push the shifter into D to pull 4th.
