E39 M54 3.0 Rebuild $8k??? Needing Some Guidance Charlotte, NC

Hey guys, haven't really posted in a while since I sold my M50 E34 (now have an E46 coupe). The issue is that our 2001 BMW 530i was running perfect until it didn't. The intake hose had a crack in it, went through a car wash and while pulling in, the under spray must have gotten water in the engine. Started with pinging but now the engine is shot.

Took it to a local shop and machine shop and asked for a rebuild because the top end is perfect. They said that to do it would be $8k and that the blocks could not be bored out. I ran across threads where that did not seem like the case. Their recommendation is to put in a used engine and call it a day.

I am in Charlotte, NC and the BF members have been a great help int he past. Clock is ticking on what to do, so any timely recommendations/advice/feedback would be great. Also either someone local that could do the work or source an engine possibly.

Pull motor out, use another motor is fine. To much for that rebuild. If that’s the case you can do the 540i motor. But those guides go all the time.

I’d recommend giving Dan ,the owner, at Touring Car in Stallings a ring. I would think he can source and swap you a good used long block for much less.
