I have 235/45/17s on my 28i Vert front and back, they are OK, but you will have to grab that steering wheel more. It will want to go left and right every time there is uneven surface. Unless you have an M3. That can handle it.
I will have to change my tires next month or so, and I will definitely get 225s for the front tires and 235s for the rear though. I have M3 offset bushings in front, that helped a bit with these tires if you want to go forward and get the wider ones.

"Without problems," depends on the rims you select.

If you select a 7.5x17 with an offset of 41mm, then yes it will fit. But, the actual tire fitment is a 225/45x17. If you're trying to save money on tires, I think you should look closer. Your proposed tire size, 235/40x17 might cost more than the 225/40x18 that you already have.

Why are you ditching the 18's, they are generally very desirable among this crowd.

Stupid question here, but you know that you cannot put any 17" tire on the same rim that currently holds any 18" tire, right? You have to buy new rims to make this plan work.

    I find this humorous.

Yep. My E36 came from the factory with 235/40/17s all around and I don’t seem to have a problem.

95 Ms came with that size standard. Though, not much selection in that size anymore.
