    No Ignition or Fuel

Alright. Just got myself a bit of a project e30. Pretty stoked about it, but, as I said, it's a project and I'm new to the e30 scene. First post here as well.

Here's the deal: the project I bought is a 1987 automatic sedan 325i rolling chassis with a 1989 manual convertible 325i engine (M20) and drivetrain swapped in. The previous owner started the project and gave up on it. I have since picked it up in hopes to get it running again. The engine will crank compression on all 6 cylinders is just fine and (most) electrics will turn on. All spark plugs are brand new along with ignition coil and fuel pump. I know the fuel pump works as I connected it to an independent 12v battery source and it primed right up. However, under the car's power, the fuel pump is not priming upon the turn of the key. The other hiccup is the ignition coil is not getting power. I ran a quick voltage test with a voltmeter and I got nothing across the cables going to the ignition coil. As a result, there's no spark in the cylinder.

So, any theories or suggestions on what to check to get this engine running under it's own power? In my short research of the topic, I read that I should be checking the crank position sensor (CPS) and the fuel pump relay on the driver's side of the engine bay. I will be doing that shortly, so any tips on doing so would be appreciated as well. I'd really prefer not to have to go wire-digging, but if it comes to that I will.

Any input here is definitely helpful. feel free to ask any further clarifying questions as well.

    Thanks in advance,
    Matt

Start with the crank position sensor. You could jump the fuel pump relay to ensure they are working but the pumps shouldn't come on until the ECU sees the engine cranking (crank position sensor).
