    E36 M3 - Head valve/spring questions.

Replacing original '96 M3 head bc of a blown HG and newly cracked head. (163k)

Used head purchased was from a '97 328 that had been freshly cleaned/decked and checked for cracks etc.

The used head still has the original 328 valves/springs installed and also came with the 328 cams. Head is overall very clean & only had some small amounts of carbon on the valve faces.

My question is is it ok to leave the valves/springs installed or should I really take those out and lap them? If I dont what are the risks if any beside already used to some degree?

Or should I take them out and put my original M3 valves/springs in that have no issues and are super clean from the shop that checked my head. This will add hours of work but I will do whatever is necessary.

Of course there is the other option of replacing them all with new hardware.

I don’t think the head from a 328 will fit an S50 or S52 engine. The 328 has an engine from the M52 family while the M3 engine is either an S50 or an S52 engine. They are totally different engines.

Yea that's not the question I was asking but thanks. The head is the same.

Link attached for those that disagree.

Plenty of people have swapped S52 cams into M52 without changing the valve springs. But the S52 spring are different. If I had the right parts as you do, I would swap them over. If I did not, I probably would not bother buying them and swapping them over. Valves and lifters are the same. Carbon can be cleaned from valves.

I'll remove them and install my M3 cams, springs and valves as well and lap the valves to mate them to the new head then.

    Thx!
