Notice how the left exhaust pipe is carboned up while the right one is shiny new. Is this a fake exhaust pipe or is this an active valve variable loudness exhaust setup which has never been set to the "loud" setting by the driver which means the second exhaust valve has never been used since the valve has never opened.

BMW's do have a valve that blocks one pipe at certain times. It is not controlled by the user via a button. The DME decides when to open or close the valve. As far as I know, BMW doesn't make any vehicles that have a non-functioning exhaust pipe that is only for looks. (this does not include the E46 M3 Dinan exhaust, which one side is fake).

Yes this car has a exhaust solenoid on one of the tips. When you stomp it the other one opens.

In sport+ the valve may or may not stay open all the time, I'm not sure. But in regular mode, it is controlled by the DME, and it will open and close as the DME seems fit.
I guess my point is that it's not like some Porsches I've seen where there is an exhaust button and that is the only way to keep it open or closed.

So why is one of the exhaust tips black and the other one silver?
Soot, carbon, exhaust, whatever you want to call it. In the one pic I can see, you can see the exhaust flap closed, plain as day.
