Curious as to the value of the 5 speed out of my 323i... it rotates good in all gears with zero noises or plays.
I did some Google searches and didn't come up with any numbers mentioned. Just curious if anyone has any ideas.
thanks.

I'm curious, what are you replacing it with?
I'll take a wild guess, $750 value.
There's no way. The M10 5 speeds are going for $1000 to the 2002 guys, so these things can't be worth less than that.
Turns out my car has more rust than originally found. the pinch welds in the engine bay and the trunk are showing rot, and the trusted body guy i took the car to didn't even get it on the lift to look underneath. He told me the car was definitely savable, but i'd need to budget close to $10k for rust repair, and that's not even factoring in paint. All in all, I'm super sad about it, but where I'm at in my life (especially now) i cant be investing that kind of money into a project that'd probably be 2-3 years from completion.
So! goal now is to find a good, (mostly) rust free 320i, and graft in all the euro goodies i have. I'll end up getting a euro tail and doing that the right way. I have awesome wheels, bumpers, and a Recaro interior, so I'm already ahead of the game.

If it is an overdrive 5 speed then a good price point would be $800-$900. How many miles are on your transmission? How clean is it? Have the input and outshaft seals been replaced? Has the selector shaft seal been replaced?
If it is a close ratio 5 speed then a good price point would be $1000-$1200. The same questions on the close ratio box as above. Your answers will raise or drop the price point.
Since you have an M20 bellhousing, it will cost somebody who would like to use it on an M10 the labor of removing the bellhousing to swap it. Those who have the M20 in their E21 with a four speed usually opt for the much more plentiful and therefore inexpensive overdrive Getrag 260 5 speed found in the E30 325e/325i and E28 528e.

Hmmmm good to know, I guess I thought they’d be worth more cause it’s from a “rarer” car.
About 74k miles on the trans, but it’s been sitting since the late 90s. Nothing has been replaced on it, i pulled it from the car sometime in 2017, and it’s been sitting in my garage since.

The one thing that makes it more valuable to maybe someone in the E21 or 2002 community is that it probably has the mechanical speedometer output. If you plan to build a M20 E21 I would just keep it as a spare on a shelf, unless you need the money.

Yea, I was considering that, myself.
But! I have a friend who needs the transmission, but neither of us really know the price point on one. I need the money to help fund my next e21 (which I already have my sights on something) but I also don’t want to screw my friend over...

It’s whatever came in the 323i with a 5 speed, which I believe is a g245.
I had heard/read that these were decently hard to come by, and was just looking for opinions on what they were worth.

If you take a picture of the part number it’d help value it. On the off chance someone shoved a 265 with a mechanical speedo you’d be looking at much more. Other ones somewhere in between. My bet is some variety of getrag 260.

early G265s' with speedo drives are M30 transmissions and not compatible with M20's. newer G265s' are plentiful and not worth much but they don't have speedo drives. so a E21 G245, M20 compatible trans is only valuable to someone with a E21 and wants a M20 swap.

Or an m50. Clocking would be slightly off, but that’s about it. There’s a small window of removable bell housing 265s that’s worth quite a lot. Actually, 265s in general are worth quite a bit in the last couple years. The removable m20 bell housing 265 existed in ‘82 with the port that the speedo drive could be put into for an e21.
That said, I’m not saying it’s likely to be that. Just possible someone put it in over the last 40 years.

right, my mistake. i meant to say G260s' are readily available.

it's a g245 that bolts to an m20 6 cylinder.
the g245 I pulled from my '82 e21 bolted to an m10 4 cylinder.
you need to realize the 4 cylinders and 6 cylinders have different bolt patterns. The engine and bell housing bolt patterns are different.
Sounds like you intend to part out your 323. Sell the trans to someone who wants to put a 6 cylinder into a 2002; it would be ideal for that.
Awesome, thanks.
I already have someone lined up who bought a 323i without a engine/trans, and just swapped in a 2.7 into it. It’s got the e30 trans in it, so no Speedo
