In the ZF S5D 320Z 5-Speed Manual Transmission I know they are known to have shift pins that wear out after awhile, and a beefer kit was made for them. Anyone know what month and year BMW started installing the beefer shift pins in their transmissions? Was there a point that some of these transmissions were made with the new upgraded pins?
No wear. It's purely a chemical reaction between the LT-1 fluid and the teflon lined bushiings.
No beefer parts. The only thing needed to repair is to replace the lined bushings with new ones. Yes, vendors throw in a ton of extra parts to get the price up. They are actually doing a dis-service. The 5th detent plunger they sell is for the HCH box. You aren't supposed to put it in the HMW box without also replacing the guide plate. The differences are very subtle, and obviously many many have done the swap.
And this not a ZF only problem. It effects Getrag boxes, Even Ford automatics of that era had issues. Toyota Supra owners were throwing away $7000 transmissions because of the issue. Only ZF offered a repair kit. As a matter of fact, when I rebuild a Getrag box, I machine the case to accept the ZF liners.
