Wiring the obd port for full functionality on pre-fl e39

So the title pretty much says it all. Has anyone wired the obd port to fully function? I know by jumping pins 17 and 20 to pin 2 on the 20pin engine bay connector connects both K-lines to obd socket, but how about the ignition detection? If you wire it to the batt pin then you can't turn if off. Is the only option to run a wiring from ignition to obd port pin 1 to get true ignition on obd port?

Pin Functions.pdfThis will give you an idea of the functions you will be able to wire to your OBD port.

Well it didn't actually help me, because that's just a generic pin out and doesn't apply to e39 fully. E39 doesn't use the pin 15 (L-line), that's only used by older cars. I know If I connect the pins 17 and 20 to pin 2, I get access to both K-lines on the OBD port (as I said in my initial post). To make it fully function I would need to wire the ignition detection to OBD port. One way would to be connect the batt pin to ignition pin, but that would cause the diagnostic equipment would see constant ignition on, so not a viable option. Running wire for the ignition from the engine bay to OBD port isn't practical. Thanks for posting that anyway. What would really help is to know where to gain access the easiest to ignition ( I would guess the ignition switch) and to the second K-line. Then it would be possible to wire it to be fully obd2. I'm not sure is it a good idea to permanently short the both K-lines together at the 20 pin diagnostic port cap.

why not just buy a round plug to obd adapter for like $7 on ebay?

All bmw use the same pinouts. That chart is right.

Most E39 do use pin 15 actually. If there is a pin in it in the round plug its used.

They don't use the pin 15. If they did you would need to use ADS interface. Here is a bus diagram for pre-fl e39.

I got the all the cables I need including ICOM, but I was wondering if someone has made the OBD port fully functional. That would be handy in variety of situations. Let's say you want to code something, you can do inside the car simply by connecting the OBD port, or you want to see some live data while driving etc (Might not be that usefull in the states, where I live during winter it can get quite cold). Sure you can snake the cables from the engine inside the by cracking open window, but the point was to see if anyone has made the OBD port fully functional and how have they connector all the missing pins.

if pin 15 is populated in your round plug then it uses it. thats the only way to know for sure. and yes that would mean you need an ADS interface.

Yet to see e39 that needs ADS (or any BMW documentation for that matter). That's beside the point. The point was find out if anyone has wired the OBD to be OBD-II compliant.

FWIW i got an under-dash OBD female plug from an e39 (to retrofit into my late 1997) and it only has 4 wires:

    Pin 4 Ground
    Pin 5 Ground
Pin 7 K Data Line (TXD)
    Pin 16 Battery +
