Help: Car won't start after valve cover (VCG) job

    Hello all,

So just finished replacing my Valve cover and gaskets on my 2013 X1 (N20B20 engine) 82k miles. Tedious job but pretty straightforward. I have done all VCGs on all my bimmers E30, E46, E92, and never had a problem.

However, the car won't start. It cranks but it won't start. Battery was disconnected before the job and fully charged with my battery tender overnight after the job. I double checked all connections, bolt torques, etc. and all seems to be ok. I read the codes with bimmerlink and the only one I get is:

    Code A10A
    EWS4_Timing_Chall_Resp_Fehler
    Symptom: No signal".

    Any suggestions? -appreciate any input.

You should identify the car a bit more exact, as there were a few different DMEs used on different years.

What module reported that error? I've looked through DME codes and EWS4/FEM codes for your car and haven't found that one. They typically have a lot more characters.

    It is a 2013 X1 sDrive28i
The module reporting the error is the CAS

    I also scanned it with my c310 and I get: 31, 03, A1, 0A No found!

Is the DME even powering up?
    Are all modules powering up?

Yup all modules power up. Just disconnected and reconnected everything again and used contact cleaner with no luck. Towing it tomorrow to my Indy...

SOLVED: when reinstalling the High pressure fuel pump (HPFP) it is very important to MANUALLY crank the engine so that the exhaust camshaft is at bottom dead center (lowest point). I did not do this and broke the HPFP. Also the fuel rail needed to be primed. New HPFP kit was $300 OEM Bosch.

Thank you for coming back with the solution! I'm surprised there were no codes set (yet) for this?

    Good fix.

Yes, thanks for the followup. I didn't realize the N20 needed HPFP removal to change VCG. The N54/55 HPFP's are chain driven. Which engines use the cam driven pumps?
