Will new tranny plug stop the leaking?

Manual trans, the plug has been leaking for a while, tried rtv on the outside as a stop-gap, that failed, finally I took the plug out and wrapped it in Teflon tape as I had seen suggested, reinstalled/refilled, and it’s still leaking, haven’t even driven the car since the ‘fix’.

Is a new plug likely to stop the leaking or could there be something else going on?

    Thanks

Hopefully not a cracked case ,these are tapered plugs and if overtightened will crack the aluminum cases
