1989 735IL Clown horn DWA light blinking while driving

New to the forum and couldn’t find anything with the search function. Newer owner of a BMW 89 735IL. Here’s my problem and I don’t even know where to start or what to look into.

While I’m driving down the road the dwa light on the dash will blink and a clown horn noise is heard.Sometimes it goes off every 3-4 seconds. Sometimes it will not go off for 20-30 minutes. Sometimes it will go off rapidly in successions if 2-5 times and the car almost dies. There doesn’t seem to be anything that I can notice or anything I am doing that is making it go off and for all I can tell it’s completely random. Any suggestions or information on where I should begin to look would be greatly appreciated.

do you have a aftermarket or dealer installed antitheft system installed or just the drive away system which ones activates via the code in the OBC on board computer? How to set that is shown in the owners manual.

I believe it’s dealer installed. I was not given a FOB when I purchased the vehicle. But can activate the alarm with the double lock feature with the key on the drivers door

How would I know if I have the drive away system?

I also don’t have the owners manual.(will the code be specific to my vin or can I look up any manual for the car and find info on the drive away system and the code for the OBC)

I have done a little digging and think but I might be totally off on this that my issue may be a Hood switch but couldn’t locate it under the hood. And I could be off but I had the car running and it was blinking and going off but when I popped and opened the hood it seem to stop. (Which in itself confused me because I would think opening the hood while having this issue would make it worse)?

The car had been sitting in a barn and has signs of mice so I’m wondering if it could be a motion issue?(read this in another forum with a different model of bmw) however I’ve driven the car for quite awhile and would have guessed any mice would have vacated the premises.

This issue has never actually caused the car to die but like I said if it goes off repeatedly in short successions the car feels like it’s going to die. My fear is that it will cause the car to die, but this might just be a nuisance.

I own your same model-year. I battled with my N1 Antitheft Module (DWA), until I finally removed it and threw it away!

Have a look at Page 6575-00 in the ETM. http://www.armchair.mb.ca/~dave/BMW/e32/

The chirp comes from the H1 Antitheft Horn on Page 6575-01, and the dash light is the V5 IR/DWA LED on Page 6575-04.

The engine stumbling is caused by the BLK/VIO (SW/VI) wire from X331 pin 1 to X1500 pin 38 on the A200 Motronic Control Unit on Page 6575-02. This is the "Drive Away" DWA protection.

N1 is a green plastic module hidden under the left rear seat, bolted to the vertical sheet metal, so it is hard to access. You need to pull the carpet free to access the 2 Philips screws that hold it in place. Then pull the module free and unplug it.

But that's not the end of the story! The 15A fuse shown on Page 6575-01 powers your On Board Computer, so it will go cold and dark. I soldered an inline fuseholder with a 10 amp fuse between the thick red wire at X335 pin 4 and the thin RED/GRY/YEL (RT/GR/GE) wire at X335 pin 2.

This works a treat. Spend some quality time with your E32!

DWA Module has been disconnected. Due to this being an intermittent issue I will report back after a longer period of time, but this seems to have fixed the issue.

    Thank you!!!

    Glad we could help!

Is this possibly the reason that this car was available for you to buy?
