Whine from engine .. increases with speed

Our 2007 X5 3.0si has a whine from engine area that increases with speed, it's almost unbearable above 90km/h. Where could this be from? At low speeds it's not much.
An alternator was serviced sometime back, could this be the cause? Or is this water pump?

When I experienced this with the 05 X3 it turned out to be the A/C compressor.
