    FS: 1995 BMW 840Ci - Oxford Green/Parchment - 76K miles - excellent, w/lots of extras

    SOLD

Today's a very sad day, in that I've finally come to the moment where I have to put my last collector/classic BMW up for sale. After 10 years and 25 BMWs, I recently promised my wife I'd pull back from restoring/collecting/refreshing my favorite classics from Bavaria, and give her a spot back in the garage. Having recently sold off 6 cars in the last year or so, I've been putting off the E31 until last, hoping something might change in the meantime so that I could keep working on this one. Unfortunately, the lottery win never happened , so my dream showcase warehouse/restoration garage plans have faded away.

So here I am, starting what may likely be my last for sale post in the 8 series classified section. I will continue to add information to this thread as I have time, since there is a lot of things to cover, and I like to be as complete and forthright with all details pertaining to the car... it's going to take a while to get it all on here, and with photos. Please bear with me. If you are interested based on the initial info and photos, please do not hesitate to reach out by PM and I will answer back as soon as I'm able.

In short, I'm selling my 4th and likely last E31; a very well kept 1995 840Ci with just under 76K miles. I am also including a bunch of extra goodies along with a car that's had a host of recent refreshments and upgrades. I'm *really* hoping to sell the car to an E31 enthusiast, so I won't likely be posting the car anywhere else for at least a month or so. As many of you know, all 8 series cars are project cars! Even the most museum ready, mint 850CSi will have a laundry list of items to work on, even if the car is fully presentable and drive-able. My 840 is no different. The previous owner took care of a ton of things, and I've continued that trend over the last 26 months of ownership, but I've reached my limit for time, money and energy for this one, so as usual, I will have to leave a few things for the next owner to take care of (passing the torch as it were). That said, the car really doesn't need anything at the moment, and most of the heavy lifting has already been done with regard to most of the big items.

For reference, I purchased the car from a fellow BMWCCA member in Indiana in December of 2017. I actually found the car in the Roundel print magazine, which in this digital shopping era, was an unexpected find.

I won't get into all of the car's details in this first post, but I did want to mention that as of late last night, the car has just undergone a 22 hour professional (minor) paint correction which truly has made the decision to sell the car SO much more difficult! Juan from Aesthetic Auto Spa, LLC here in Tucson agreed to work on the car in my garage, and slaved for two days to bring out a shine that this car has likely never seen; no doubt better than how the car left the factory at Dingolfing almost 26 years ago. The paint on these E31s is fairly soft, so even with a minor correction the results are absolutely stunning. I highly recommend a correction on any 8 series if you want to fall in love with the car all over again. If you're in the Tucson area, hit up Juan at Aesthetic! I will certainly be taking advantage of his services again in the future. Additionally, this 840 has just been sealed with Migliori Strata ceramic coating, which I had purchased over a year ago in anticipation for this moment.

Again, I will continue to add information to the thread as I have time, but for now, here's the build sheet and a couple of photos from last night/today after the paint correction:

    JOE! She's looking unbelievable!!

I'm sure most on here know Joe's reputation, but I'll say it anyway - if there was anyone I'd have no doubts about buying a car from, it's Joe. He's obsessive and a true enthusiast. I think in most cases when he buys a car, the refresh kits arrive before the car does. If you want a previous owner who truly cared about a car and loved on it, this is your car.

If I didn't have an 8 at the moment, I'd be on my way to Tuscon.

Good luck with the sale brother!

Super nice of you to say Dave... after ten years and four 8 series cars, I can't believe I've officially inked plans to leave the E31 community! Well I did put in some raffle tickets for a 2020 M8 Competition, so I guess there's a *chance* I might come back to the '8 series' community

Thankfully though, you and I don't need E31's to bond over! Plenty of other chassis codes we have/had in common over the years LOL! Thanks again my car-brother from another mother!

Sorry for the delay in followup guys... here's my next round of updates... It's a total smorgasbord of photos, but I've tried to add descriptions and info to go with each item/topic...

These are some advertisements from the guy I bought the car from a few years ago; one from Cars.com and one from the roundel magazine ad where I initially found the car. Note some of the
big ticket items that he took care of (which were a deciding factor in buying the car). I do have a .PDF of his service records too, which I can email to interested parties:

I tried for 2 years to install the proper Euro 3 spoke wheel on the car, as I like this wheel much better than the trapezoid horn wheel you often see (which are pretty easy to find). So 3 steering wheels and thousands of dollars later, I finally found the correct wheel and all ancillary parts to properly covert the 4 spoke wheel to a 3 spoke sport wheel
with working horn mechanism! The wheel itself came from a forum member here and has been freshly wrapped with M stitching. It took months to gather all the parts, and even the 3 back screws/isolators came from a BMW collector in Greece!

Among many other spare parts, and accessories I'm including with the car, I also plan to give the buyer a genuine CSi spice rack rear bumper kit and actual genuine CSi side mirrors with glass. The first two photos I think are just from the
internet, but the third photo is of the actual pair of mirrors. I just recently received the mirror glass for them too ($$$). The rear bumper kit is one of the last ones that was available for sale in the USA that I could find, and yes, it does
include the tow hook cover, which as you may know is now an NLA part.

Newly installed rear shock tower reinforcement plates from Phoenix Motorsports in the UK, along with new grade 10.9 bolts and locking nuts:

Just installed new rear rotors, brake pads and painted the calipers with high-end caliper paint kit (spray). The car has only been driven around the block since these photos, so the silver coating still hasn't even all rubbed off yet.

The fabric on the original parcel shelf was a mess, so I picked up a replacement from a fellow forum member. It wasn't a perfect replacement piece, but was a 100 times better than the original. I think the suede looks very classy too:

Had to buy the rear seat belt cover too, as the originals are very fragile and break apart like an old fortune cookie:

In trying to track down a death wobble, I replaced the driver's side caliper with a brand new Brembo from ECS ($565!). The previous owner had the passenger side replaced at some point, so I figured it was the driver's side's turn to stick.
But after all that, it turned out to be flat spotted tires instead (doh!). At least now, both calipers are new, and matching, but without the BMW logo (replacement Brembos for the E31 do not come with the logos):

A recent photo (pre-paint correction) next to my 2001 Oxford Green X5 (also for sale):

Preemptively replaced the caps in the general module, with resulting 16 minute power-down current draw result of 43mA (right on the money):

43mA current draw after sleep kicks in. Note the never used spare wheel and original spare tire.

Brand new tires arrived for my 840's ACS Type III wheels, and another set for my '99 M3 (sold in 2018).

I converted the car to a single battery setup:

I removed a ton of phone related wires from the car (most wires not pictured except for the battery jumper line), as well as all the phone related equipment, which was still powering up as it should:

4 used tips from the parts car I bought... they're not perfect, but it's better than spending $800 on the last new set that was bought up a few years ago!

Euro warning triangle purchased from a fellow E31 owner in Sweden:

As I've been asked a couple of times already what exactly is coming with the car, I figured I'd clearly list everything out. Please understand that a full price offer gets ALL of the extra stuff with the 840Ci (in addition to the default items), which I believe makes this car a pretty darn good deal at my asking price. If you don't care about these extras, please make me an offer on the car knowing that you would not be receiving the following extra items:

    Extra items:

    • BMW OEM Car Cover (only used outdoors two days in two+ years, otherwise only used in the garage)
    • BMW OEM Electrical Troubleshooting Manual for 1995 BMW 840Ci (an excellent condition, original full binder version, not a copy)
    • BMW OEM rear lower valance sport/CSi 'spice rack' kit, unpainted new in the box, with tow hook cover, foil, and more than 5 spring clips (I bought extras)
    • BMW OEM sport/CSi side mirrors, new unpainted, with new in box mirror glass for each
    • Replica front bumper filler, new and unpainted (thanks Dave!)
    • 4 matching, refinished AC Schnitzer Type III wheels, with new Hankook tires (less than 75 miles on them), with new genuine ACS center caps, new genuine ACS aluminum 7mm spacer/adapters on each corner, and 20 brand new extended lug nuts (wheels are a square set up, 18" x 8.5j +15et 5x120 ø82mm, tires are staggered)
    • Brand new front upper control arms (not installed)
    • Brand new front lower control arms (not installed)
    • Brand new front shock bellows and rebound dampers (not installed)

Items you will get with the car by default:

    • Original Style 8 wheels in good condition, with good condition Michelin tires
    • Two fully working E31 keys, programmed and working with new batteries
    • All books and manuals that originally came with the car, including radio code card etc.
    • All cell phone related items that came out of the car, wiring etc. and any other misc interior parts that came from the car
    • OEM three spoke sport steering wheel which is currently on the car (no airbag on that style of wheel, so 3.3ohm resistor is installed in its place)
    • Original E31 4 spoke steering wheel with single stage airbag
    • Original parcel shelf from the car
    • Aftermarket (Coco?) floor mats that came with the car
    • Brand new replica 840Ci floor mats from Marek in Poland
    • OEM new replacement seat drive cables
    • Brand new rear shock tower reinforcement plates from the UK, with nickel plated grade 10.9 extended bolts and lock nuts (installed)

I'll continue to update this list as I find stuff in the garage and around the house.

    Some undercarriage photos as promised:

I have not prepped or washed the undercarriage at all since I got the car, this is how I got it... quite clean and only minimal rusty bolts and some brackets for a 25 year old car. Most everything appears to be original to the car, aside from the brakes obviously, and maybe some suspension arms over the years. Exhaust seems to be all original. Look closely at the engine as well. The valve covers have been repainted during the gasket replacements, but essentially the M60 is very original with even the upper radiator hose still having cosmoline evidence on it. Probably would suggest a cooling system overhaul at some point, but the engine runs very smooth and strong. I'd probably do a transmission drain, fill, filter too, just be sure to use the current Shell LA 2634 equivalent (not sure what's out there these days). If I didn't mention it earlier, the Hankook tires have only about 75 miles on them...you can still see the red and yellow paint stripes on the tread. The bummer is that I let the car sit too long over the summer after a drive, and I ended up flat spotting 3 out of 4 of them. After multiple trips to Discount tire trying to get them road force balanced, buying new suspension arms (not installed), buying a brand new Brembo caliper thinking it was sticking, I realized I was just dealing with flat spotted tires. Since I made that discovery, I've kept the car on the lift, in the hopes the tires will come back to round. But if there's still a shimmy at 55-60 MPH...it's the tires dammit! BTW, the original tires and wheels come with the car too, which are smooth as silk on the road, but I'm fearful the Hankooks may need replacement- damn shame.

Nice 8er! Are you sure it's going to PA & not remaining in SoCal?

Haha that's exactly what I said! Looks too nice sitting next to its blue twin!

Thanks again Mark for a smooth transaction in the midst of this world crisis. It's also comforting to know that as I bow out of the E31 world after ten years and four 8 series cars, that you've used my car to bring a new member into the fold. I hope you enjoy showing your brother in law the E31 ropes! (assuming you ever let him see the car)

North Pittsburgh area, Mars/Cranberry to be exact. My brother in law was out to Ca in February and got the bug when he saw mine. Joe's was the same car and in great condition. My BiL is also named Joe, so it was a perfect fit.

Fab @EF1, home of the SoCal8s WrenchFest, is going to be installing some fresh suspension bits before it heads out.

Well Mike, looks like you might get to see my 840Ci after all! Heck you've seen my former '95 Canadian at Oktoberfest a few months ago, now you'll get to see my former US spec '95!

Mark, it's refreshing to know my car finally made it to WrenchFest (of sorts!), I always wanted to take the car to SoCal for at least one Eight's event. Shoulda coulda woulda!

This car is back on the market. Watch for it on BaT in the coming days. It’s currently in PA. But has been stored inside during the winter. I doubt it has more than 2-3k more miles on it. I’ll post the link here when it’s published.

Wow! That's going to be painful to watch! Every car I've sold in the last 4 years has gone up by 50% since! BTW there's one just like 'mine' on BaT right now that I'm watching... What's the reason for him sell it Mark?

Joe - thought about you when I saw the Oxford 840 ending today on BaT - and then I see this! Will be interesting to see how they both do.

Thanks for the comments guys! Hope your brother in law gets a good run on BaT! Will be fun to watch, especially after the other Oxford car that just finished.

Anyway, I need to catch up with both you guys soon- Cheers!

Hello Barny from Belgium, I don't think you have enough posts to send or receive private messages on this forum yet, otherwise I could send you my email.

So probably best to just ask your questions here or on BaT and if we can answer them, we will reply to you as soon as possible.

    Thanks!

Heya - I am the lucky winner of the BaT bid, and Chamberlin I wanted to check and see if any of the "extra" items you list from your sale in 2020 were either given to the current seller, or that you have still have and I can talk to you about obtaining them (particularly the car cover!)

    thanks!
