Went to start my 06 z4 3.0 SI after it sat for a month or so and it was dead. Still had lights etc but not enough juice to start. Did a quick charge and it started so I let it run for 15 minutes or so. Tried to start it today 2 weeks later and it was totally dead. No lights, nothing. Thinking it’s a bad battery. There’s no date or anything on the battery so not sure how old it is. Any way to test if it’s bad that I can do myself or if it’s possible that this could be the original battery which I would doubt? Also what will have to be reprogrammed once I replace the battery? Thanks for any help.
You have probably ruined the battery by allowing it to completely discharge. If the car is going to sit for a week or more you should have a charger/maintainer, CTEK or similar. There are even solar options if you don't have power available. You can try to recharge the battery and then have it load tested at a parts store, but it's probably too late.
I'm not sure if your 06 requires programing for a battery change, my 04 doesn't. Try doing a forum search.
That battery is done, if the car is going to sit a lot get the battery tender as mentioned above
Thanks for the responses. Ended up buying a new battery and picking up a battery tender. Manual says to charge battery using two posts under the hood but is there any problem hooking the tender directly to the battery in the car. My garage set up makes a direct hook up a lot easier.
thanks
I bought a battery tender from Harbor Freight and hood up directly to the battery for the sake of convince. If I had to jump it off I would use the posts in the front under the hood.
You can hook it up to either spot. No reprogramming needed for the E85 cars. You will have to reset the power window 1 touch, that's it.
The battery tender I bought on Amazon was a name I didn’t know but bought it because it had good reviews. Had to send it back because it wasn't going into maintenance mode and I was afraid of overcharging the battery. Spent ten more bucks and bought a Battery Tender Plus. Has nice long cables so I was able to hook it up under the hood. Took a couple of hours but now its on maintenance mode as it should be and working properly. Thanks to everybody that responded. I appreciate the help.
