well my 2001 540i is looking too rusty to make it thru her NY state inspection.
As I've gotten very proficient at updating timing chains and guides a 2001 X5 with a bad chain (not running) caught my eye.
As I'm totally unfamiliar with this model (other than the 4.4 l V-8) I figured I'd poke you guys to see what else you'd be on the look out for when looking over one of these with 111k on the clock.
Thanks.

which year/engine are you referring to? Gen1 I6 models?

The X5 I'm looking into is a 2001 with the 4.4 l V-8. The ad mentions some new airbags in a box in the back so it sounds as if it has the air suspension which I've read people have trouble with. From the reviews I've seen on line (haven't found anything particularly helpful yet) it's surprising to see that the under hood access is quite a bit more restricted than on my 540 but I guess the whole cowl piece comes out with two bolts, opening things up. I know valve cover gaskets and CCV valves are issues on the 4.4l V8 so getting to the back of the engine is a nice french benefit!
Any other things specific to the X5 I should be aware of?
Check the outer CV axle boots. If they're torn, the joint may be damaged and the axle needs replacing. Just depends on how long it's been run with a torn boot.
