A friend of mine gave me an 87 325i convertible a few years ago. It quickly turned me into an e30 fan. It's been my daily driver. It was a northern car so the rust is starting to take the body. I currently have a hole where the gas pedal attaches to the floor. Last summer I bought a 85 325e in near perfect condition. The timing belt broke on the 325e so the guy wanted to get rid of it.
My 87 325i is an automatic. The 85 325e is a manual.
My plan is to take the motor from my 325i and swap it into the 325e. Once that's done I'll have something fun to drive while I focus on restoring the 325i's body. Is there anything I should do to the engine while it's out? Will this be a plug and play swap? I've done my research on the wiring side of the swap.
Thank you guys for your time and input!
It will bolt in like it grew there. Don't forget to put a pilot bushing into the "new" engine's crank for the input shaft.
FYI Your 325"e" is really 2.7 liters. A popular combination is the 2.7 short block with an "i" head. You have everything needed.
If you can leave two black stripes from the exit of one corner to the braking zone of the next, you have enough horsepower. - Mark Donohue
