...but I managed to change my spark plugs tonight.
I distrust the spark plug tool in the trunk, so I got the Hazet shop tool from Maximillian. Their price on it is far less than what I've seen elsewhere for it (some as high as $72+), but still a bit dear at $42. Along with the locking extensions I got, it quieted my sissy inclinations about this motor and things went smoothly.
(I did this same job on my Mini without worries - I know I'm mental)
My old plugs look like crap
They were all gapped too lightly (.026 - .028), and the car was running rich for a while too when I had a bad ECU. New ones are all gapped precisely to .035 (came out of the box at .030). Hoping the rest of the things I'm going to do (replace some fuel lines, re-install the rebuilt injectors, replace the cap and rotor, and do the in-line fuel pump/filter) will have things working right again.

Never had an issue with any of the tools that come in the toolkit. Have used the spark plug socket on my M6 twice without incident. Of course, the newer toolkits, I would not trust.
