recently just bought a 1984 325e. Everything is fine except for the fact that it leaks coolant badly near the firewall. I've seen a similar post of the same exact problem but OP never really posted how he fixed it. Picture below is from the original poster. Same exact problem which is a hole in that metal valve.
change the valve. look on rock auto or one of the other parts places. I cannot remember what that valve is called though so you will have to look at the pics until someone comes on and remembers that parts name

So I just encountered that valve when I went to replace all my coolant hoses. That's a thermostat that prevents extremely hot coolant from entering the heater core which I guess has been known to burst into people's feet. You can replace that thermostat. Otherwise I bought hoses that eliminate that thermostat and just go straight into the heater corps. I did so at my own risk.
