So the brand new fuel pump I installed last weekend failed on Thursday.
I've already ordered a new pump, however I'm stuck, I cant get a hose into the tank to siphon the gasoline out due to the anti siphon, and the pump doesn't work so I cant pump the fuel out that way. The tank is currently at 3/4 so I believe If I take out the pump gasoline will come spilling out.
Anyone have any suggestions on how to get the fuel level low enough to replace the pump?

Why do you need to drain the tank?
If it is only 3/4 full you will be OK.

And why did the new fuel pump fail
Do you think this is low enough

Hmm, I was hoping to replace my pumps before I started mine up again. I have more fuel in the tank than that

So at that fuel level when I took the pump off about a cup of gas spilled over the edge, I was able to start siphoning through where the fuel pump used to be and got it low enough not to spillover.
I don't suggest opening the fuel pump if you have a full tank or any more than 3/4. However if there is no other option...

Wondering if you tested the pump before installing into the pump assembly, then tested the pump again after installation into the pump assembly. When you say it's an "OEM" pump, is it a genuine BMW pump that came from a BMW dealer in BMW packaging? If not, what brand did you receive to install? Thanks for the additional info - Henry
Didn't test it before it went in, but it worked for a week before failing. Its the OEM carrier and pump its the same one you get from the stealership. (There are no aftermarket options for the fuel pump carriers) The pump and carrier come together.
I sourced it through SSF Imported Auto Parts. They are the European Parts supplier for Oreillys. I'll take some photos of it tomorrow and upload them

Probably naive thought (that's too late anyway) - but when you "no other option" - did you think of removing one of the hoses that connect to the fuel filter underneath the car? Not to be a idiot here, but I drained a couple gallons of fuel that way when replacing both my filter and pump at the same time.
You can buy a pump only from Quantum fuel (Ventura ca) for $70...I found that out via search here. HFP-439
I replaced the filter when I did mine as well...and gravity drained as much fuel as I wanted into a bucket from tank as well.
Buy BMW pre-formed fuel lines if you are going to do filter..I have the p/ns if u need them- mine were full of black deteriorated hose crud..(p/ns are incorrect at realoem)

Courtesy of Vic at Husker BMW...bmwdirectparts.com ..special order when I got them...the bends were too extreme for bulk hose (my opinion- I tried) real oem lists p/ns for the 850 dual filter arrngment (apparently)
Does your new failed pump test ok on the bench? I replaced the flywheel speed sensor as well prior to doing the pump- a permissive for pump to run.

New pump works and car runs now, although it seems like it's idling low now. I need to check delivery pressure of the new pump and see if it's in spec. I also need to change the filter, if it's severely clogged that might be a cause of the pump failure.
I've not tested old pump, I'll try it tonight.

If you have bad gas, it can ruin a new pump in a hurry....ask me how I know
