In this picture, this connector goes into the top of the thermostat. When I took it out, it appears to have been burnt/melted/destroyed. Why?? What is it? Most importantly, how do I replace it?
2nd question...What happens if that small long tube that was attached to the water pump gets disconnected from the front of the engine? You know, THAT pipe EVERYONE tells me make sure it doesn't come out? This is a purely hypothetical situation. Not saying this actually happened...or not. Ugh :/
Thanks for any help!
Press the metal clip down on the connector that you are holding with your hand and it will release leftovers of the sensor: you may need to pull on that piece that has 2 wires poking out still. Seems like there is also still chunk of it left in the metal housing, you would need to get that out too making sure you don't push any debris into coolant below. High temps and plastic don't live forever.
If we are talking about V8, you would have to take off the manifold to reattach it in the back correctly. You can also hold it with something while removing the water pump to ensure it doesn't slide out together with it.

Thanks for your answer. I've tried to release whatever was in that connector but it doesn't want to come out. Looks burnt. I was afraid of that tube coming out and i did my best to keep it in but alas I lost that battle! Oh well, off with the manifold and once I'm in there might as well do the valley pan ://
They may have fused due to temperature, spray some penetrating fluid around the perimeter of the sensor and wiggle it back and forth gently.
Well, I did have it slide out on me once and I was able to carefully reinstall it without pulling a manifold. You have to be gentle though and you don't want to sit it crooked or damage the O ring. If that doesn't work, remove the manifold.
Ugh..that's what I was afraid of. Thanks for your replies. What is next if I can't get that connector piece out?
I could never get that connector out.
You need a new T-stat.
Replace the thermostat and if you have to put a new connector and wires on easy, the bleed the coolant system
