DME swap

I have a 97 328i auto trans. I was wondering if i can swap my ms41.1 dme with another ms41.1 and just align the ews or do I HAVE to change VIN? Ive read conflicting post i just need a clear answer thanks in advanced

Gpeterson wrote a free program to align EWS if you have a cable and laptop. I think I found it by googling but it is probably in the forums somewhere.

Manage to get a dme and ews the dude even coded it for me with a sweet tune and to my car 300$. Apparently offers this as a service dme and ews module and its working flawlessly

You dont need the ecu to have proper vin. Its merely for a dealer identification i think.
