So I was told my 97 328 has a post facelift kidney grill set up so they no longer sit flush with the nose like pre facelift models..they "stick out." I personally hate the look, and want to switch them out so 1.)I've heard the term facelift used but for some reason only with wagons and some new models,so did my cars year model ever get a facelift?
2.) If all ☝️ is true can I still use any kidney grille? I orginally just thought m3's had a flush sitting kidney grilles so if I just put m3 grills in my 328 I would obtain the look I was going for. But if there was a "facelift" wouldn't they have changed the hole shape or something so will any kidney work
The E36 does not have pre- and post-facelift, that's something the E46 has. The E36 has a change in the front that came with the '96 model year. The kidneys changed shape. This means the grille is also changed.
However, there are MY 1996 cars with flat grills.
You may need the nose sheet metal as well.
Compare mid-1995 part number to a late-1996 (or later) part number in www.realoem.com. E36 is in ‘classic’ catalog w/E30, E34, E21 etc..

Not sure about now, but once upon a time you could get 'facelift' looking kidneys for the pre-96 nose panel.
So, if you have a pre 96 car, you may be able to just get kidneys from the same time period. Unless they changed the nose piece.
