Bmw E39 540i M62 Power Steering bit heavier

Yesterday in the morning when i turn my car on, i feel my steering wheel a bit heavier, i check the oil Reservoir and it was empty, after i fill it with oil i try the steering wheel again and it was having the same issue.

The issue is when i move the car a bit forward about 10 meter the steering wheel become easier even if i stop and move the steering wheel it will stay easier but if i move the car over the speed 70 KM/H it will be back to become a bit heavier until i turn off the car and do the same above step.

by the way what i mean a bit heavier steering wheel is a just little harder than the normal.

Please advise if anyone has know about my issue what could it be.

    Thank You.

    Have you fixed the leak?
Make sure the resevoir is full. You need to turn the wheel to the end in both directions which will purge the air out and replace it with PS fluid.

it was leaking before but now i don't know if it becomes more since i'm checking the fluid everyday if it is missing but until now i didn't find any changes with fluid level.
does the leakage of hose could make changes with the steering wheel especially when it becomes normal when i move about 10 meters forward.

i turn the wheel to the end of direction many times but it didn't works.

If you run out of fluid the pump could be damaged internally

Did you fill the reservoir with auto transmission fluid? You mentioned oil. I'm assuming you meant ATF, but years ago I bought a car while in the military from an officer who had put motor oil in the brake reservoir so you never know.

My car has the same symptoms, both my power steering hoses are leaking heavily, but I have plenty of fluid. I have new hoses as well as a new cap and o ring on the way and will let you know if that remedies the issue.

    :forehead slap:

Power steering is a hydraulic system, of course it's not working properly if you have leaks.

    Fix the leaks.

small leaks won't affect the operation much. servotronic is probably going bad.

So heavily I thought it was an oil leak initially! I've never had issues with power steering in the past, honestly had no idea it was hydraulic, I just assumed the fluid was used to "lube" the pump. I'm glad I got new hoses and O rings coming, thanks for the tip!

Wasn't servotronic only on an M5?

nope... 540 also has one. they are very similar with an M5. I had the same problem (heavy steering wheel) and I recently (about 3 months ago) replaced my servotronic, now it's so light I initially thought car was on the lift lol...

Maybe the 540's in the European market came with them??
My 540 doesn't have it, I remember Philly and a few others adding it to their 540's.
