Hey All,
I know this topic has been discussed a multiple different ways but I can't seem to find and answer to my issue. So, I installed 4 5.25" Blaupunkt GTX525 speakers in my rear deck box and they sound terrible! Very little bass selected and the sound like they are over powered. They are 4-way 4 ohm 100 watts RMS/300 watts peak 90Hz-20KHz. I am stumped, are they suppose to be sealed like the Monsoons or are the an open air and the box needs to be ported?

I would said the speakers have to be seal in order for then to work in the rear box

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong. Assuming you are using the original DSP system/DSP Amp, my understanding is that the amp only outputs a subwoofer signal (i.e., low frequency) to the subs in the box. Typical 4-way speakers would not work well at all, since the mid and high range signals would not be there, and the low frequency signal to subwoofers are usually lower than the woofer in a 4-way can adequately handle. And as previously noted, the sub box is designed to be sealed.

Also make sure speakers are not wired out of phase.
The problem is your speakers. You installed 4-way speakers into a subwoofer channel. The channel is only going to put out a signal between the frequencies for the sub channel.
DSP rear deck subs are 8ohms... you installed 4ohm ones, which some people get away with for a while, but it does lead to increased temps inside the amp if you turn the volume up... eventually shortening the life of the components within the amp.
At 100w RMS, I would say your speakers are actually being UNDER-powered by the amp. The amp only puts out about 40w per speaker if I recall correctly. Also your speakers arent picking up bass until 90hz, DSP has a hole between 40-80hz, but you would at least start to feel some of the bass there. Your speakers go all the way up to 20,000 Hz, which is tweeter territory... out of the range for the subs in deck.
If you're going to replace the rear speakers and keep the factory DSP amp, stick to
- 8 ohms (or dual-voice coil 4ohm and wire it up for 8ohm)
- 30-50watts RMS
- 1-way subwoofer component speakers, .. stay away from 2 / 3 / 4 way speakers.. they are useless in the rear deck as you dont want the full range of sound for those channels
- maximum 200hz frequency response.. anything starting between 20hz-80hz should be fine

Thanks for the info! I also have 4 of these speakers I could use...
BOSS Audio BRS52 Replacement Car Speakers - 60 Watts of Power, 5. 25 Inch, Full Range
- Impedance: 4 Ohms, Frequency Response: 100 Hz - 18 kHz, Sensitivity: 82 dB
- Cone: Polypropylene, Voice Coil: 1 Inch Aluminum
- Surround: Foam, Basket: Stamped
Better? If not what do you recommend?

I highlighted in BOLD the issues with those speakers. You want to stay away from anything "full range" ... and also anything that handles high frequencies such as 18,000 Hz... those are 100Hz - 18kHz
The market for the right replacement component speakers is very small.. this is because of how uncommon it is for people to only target specific speakers in a component system. You're trying to change 1 speaker out of a set of components already configured in the car. Each component is tuned to respond within a frequency crossed over within the amp.. ie, tweeters are handling 10k Hz and above, midrange is handling 200Hz-10k Hz, .. subs handing everything below 200hz. This is just an example and not exact to the DSP specs... its just to give you an idea of how component systems are tuned. The E38 has tweeters and mid ranges in the doors, and subs in the back, so its essentially a left and right set of "3-way" components (even though each side has 5 speakers, 2 of them are in the same frequency). 4-way means its handling another range within the frequency differently... think of each "way" being a speaker handling a frequency range.
When you buy a "full range" speaker, it is doing the job of all of those individual speakers in 1... handling the range from usually 80-90Hz all the way up through the range to 20k Hz .
Start by looking at a these, I know they're expensive, but these are the specs to stay around:
JL Audio C5-525cw-RP
5-1/4" component woofer
polypropylene woofer with butyl rubber surround
4-ohm impedance <-------------------- try to find 8ohms if possible, or dual voice coil (DVC) 4ohm.
power handling: 25-75 watts RMS (225 watts peak)
frequency response: 48-5000 Hz <---------- handles a lot of the mid range frequency.. the rears dont push much mid-bass above 200hz, so these speakers wont do much between 200Hz-5000Hz range
sensitivity: 88.5 dB
top-mount depth: 2-1/4"

WOW, you know your sh#t! Thanks for the explanation. Almost sounds like it might just be easier and cheaper to just unhook the rear deck box and install a powered sub!

https://www.bavsound.com/ offers drop in replacements for the rear deck subs. I can't personally attest to the quality of them, but I'm probably going to get a set this summer and install them.
I have done the Bavauto upgrade for the rear deck speakers , and can attest to the quality and performance of them..Pricey, yes, ease of install and ready to go, Yes, the correct speakers for what they are meant to do Yes....
going to buy the door speakers kit this summer to complete the system...

I wonder if the Bavsound setup sounds better or equal to the Monsoon setup? Anyone heard both and can provide feedback?

I just finished the Bavsound rear deck speaker upgrade and I really like them. They fill in the lower ranges just enough to give music the fullness it deserves. Its not alot of bass but enough to keep me happy.
Just keeping it reliable and looking decent.
I have a set of reconed 3 OEM speakers and 1 new OEM speakers if you're interested, PM me.
