    Engine dies......

Ok I have a 98 m3 coupe with uuc system u exhaust k&n cold air system and a uuc lightweight single mass fly and clutch. I have been getting p1519 code off and on for a few weeks. But recently the cars engine will die when at a stops or between shifts when the rpms are 500 or so. But I can crank it back up with no issues. Car idles fine drives ok for the most part. I get 300 miles per tank so it might run a little rich. I do have a new camshaft sensor that I will be installing along with new spark plugs. Is this issue related to p1519 code or do I got a whole new issue?

I would check the intake system for leaks and check out the idle control valve

Hope you have a BMW camshaft position sensor, there have been problems with non OE ones...

I ordered it from fcp so if it does go bad I can swap it out.

You’re not listening. Genuine BMW ONLY. This isn’t a case of “when it goes bad”, they flat out do not work unless genuine BMW.

Ok I ordered one by VDO so if it it's dead on install I will claim warranty and swap it out. That's why I ordere 99% of my parts with FCP.

That one is known to be junk, return it now and stop wasting your time. Just get the Genuine BMW one from FCP and never touch it again.

You WILL end up with more codes and very erratic behavior installing that sensor.

I had the VDO, didn't last very long...bought it from BavAuto, when I contacted them re the failure they refunded me and didn't even ask for it back.

I went through this a few years ago, thinking vdo is a good company. I got to do the job twice.

It’s not that big of a deal to pull the vanos solenoid again and squeeze your hands in there to do the harness connector. Try it if you want. Maybe some are good. You would think that with all the returns vdo would improve the part. Maybe it has.

At this point I don't even know if that is my issue. I really need to buy the software so I can trouble shoot the car my self.

A scan tool like the Foxwell NT510 or 520 or 530 is a good value because you get one free brand specific module upon registration. BMW laptop software is even better and there is info on that in the diagnostics subforum here.

Then get one and go from there rather than guessing and throwing parts at it. Right now you gave zero control.

Do not install the VDO. Get the Genuine sensor.

Going too, I got plugs, fuel filter, oil, water temp sensor, camshaft sensor, vanos solenoid, and valve cover gasket. Then just clean things up a bit.

well can add CEL codes p1188 and p1189 to the list of wtf. yet the car seams to drive fine 99% of the time. did a quick visual check of the vacuum lines and intake boot. i did notice the valve cover has developed a decent leak on the front right hand side above the ac compressor.
    But it's a 90s M3......

The cam sensor does provide input to the fuel system, so perhaps the P1519 is related to the P1188/89.

Smoke machines are great for finding air leaks. I bought an Autool 206 for $135 last year. It has a pressure gauge, while the model below does not. The next model up would be the better choice for evap work because it adds a flow meter. Came in very handy finding a leak on my E61 535xi.

Ok thanks I will look into it. I drove it 70 miles today and the car only dipped to 300 rpm at a light once and no the cel lights came on. I bought the car in November and I'm only the second owner but the original owner can't give me a rundown of he did too it do to health issues. But the car is in excellent shape and 99% of the time runs like a M3 should. I just don't want to let what ever is going on to linger and get worse.

Whatever it is seems to be intermittent, which is strange for an air leak or a fuel problem. But both are potential explanations. A higher level code reader might give shadow codes that don’t trigger CEL. Not sure what you are using now.

Does the rpm dip only on quick deceleration to idle or is there no consistency?
