https://youtu.be/JsmNGXZgx-k - here’s a video of what it’s doing, I hit a pot hole and it started...
I tried to show this in the video but I’ll try to explain, if you turn the wheel right or left then to center and back the way you originally turned it, no clunk, if you turn right and left back and forth, then you get the clunk.
If you drive in a straight line you get a lot of clunks. I forget if it was right or left, but turning one way gets a lot of clunks, you can feel the wheel vibration. Turning the opposite way gets you almost no clunking.
I have replaced the control arms, control arm bushings, tie rods, and sway bar links.
Anyone have any ideas about what might be causing the clunking?
I,m afraid that you are dealing with a steering rack or outside hubs. I just replaced both on my 1992 m tech vert with 115000 miles. The car is from San Francisco and I believe that it was caused by the potholes in the city. I had also replaced everything that you did before I found the problem. The car rolls like new now.
That’s what I was afraid of... was yours was the hub or the rack?
I did the rack first which took care of 90% but I wanted it gone. the hubs are reasonably priced and they suffer damage from water after so many years of rain etc. Take the car to a mechanic with a rack. He should be able to find the problem. Its not a cheap fix but you won't believe what a tight front end does for the car.
