Okay so i have a 2004 bmw x5 with the n62 and i just removed the engine to do the valve seals, rear main seal and alternator bracket seal. I got everyting put back together and the car fires up but idles rough but doesnt die. I plugged in my fire fox scanner and I get codes
p0022 "A" Camshaft Position - Timing Over-Retarded (Bank 2)
P0024 - "B" Camshaft Position - Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance (Bank 2)
And a muiltple missfire code.
So my question is which sensor should i be looking at? The eccentric shaft sensor correct? I had noticed a crack on one of the mounts putting it back together but after looking at the price i was hoping the valve cover would hold it in place properly until i could afford one. And bank two is driver side correct?

Seems like valve timing is off
+1
Yeah I would double check the timing, for that is what you are getting codes for. Did you replace the chain and guides while you were there? The V-8's tend to be rather hard on them, and typically after 150k miles start to show.

Definitely sounds like the timing is off.

I did not touch the timing all chains where still tight. I used gst's valve replacement tool kit, that doesnt require you to remove timing chains, cam, or any chain guides.
Also what makws me believe its sensor related, is after a minute of rough idle itll smooth out or if i used my code reader to clear the codes, the idle will immediately smooth out.
If i rev it, it struggles to about 3k amd then is fine. I have not taken it for a drive.
Maybe you swapped the cam sensors or connectors

The two cam sensors are on top of the valve cover at the back

Okay, so i replaced the eccentric shaft sensor from fcp and that took care of my p0022 code.
The car will start without hestitaion and idle funny for five seconds and then smooth itself out. And a check engine light will pop up flash a couple times and diappear with the rough 5 second idle. I caught the code and its giving me p0024 still. Itll idle fine until i hit gas and then it cuts out until i get pass 2500rpms.
