Not really. The hardest parts of the swap will be the same between the two
Both pretty easy in comparison to a full engine/trans swap.
Not really. You're still swapping to a different DME, and you're swapping from a ZF transmission to a GM transmission, so you need a different transmission harness as well.
And that's about the same amount of work whether you're doing S62 or M62.
You did say you wanted auto so thats entirely up to you. I prefer to find a 4.6is engine for my e38 because I prefer auto for a daily as well. I scored one for a great price but the deal fell through due to the owner having to relocate and not having time to pull the motor out...
I seem to be really leaning towards an auto-tragic set up for the wagon. Considering just doing the 540i drivetrain and adding a S/C down the line or getting an ESS kit for the car with the current engine.
I recently took a 540i on a long trip and for my needs, this set up works great and has ample power. I have an M5 for the days I am feeling like a rennaisance hooligan
A 540iT makes a nice cruiser and grocery getter with the extra space in the hatch...
Yeah.... dat's what i'm thinking. Had a couple before and they are tons of fun with more than enough power to get me into trouble. Figure make it a nice build with suspension, paddle shift, Dinan goodies and all that stuff. Down the line, make it a sweet sleeper with an S/C.
Agreed on 540iT and Automatic. I’m elbow deep into convenience mods on mine (euro dash, rear PDC, backup camera, etc) at the moment. Otherwise, I have all the aforementioned mods including Dinan S3. Have a s/c in storage waiting to go on in the summer...
