Seeing as how the MTC branded e34 steering coupler is OOS everywhere and the only replacement is a BMW branded option for $130 bucks, I am wondering why the rubber bushing couldnt be replaced with a stock aluminum spacer (with 2 through bolts)? There doesnt appear to be any reason to be 4 bolts necessary in the current configuration excepting to isolate the steering joint, any reason I cant replace the rubber, align the lower and upper portions, and then use a steel or aluminum spacer with the correct thickness to join the knuckle with the upper shaft collar?
Having blown through my winter budget, and with the LS swap adding much heat to the driveshaft, I would like to get something done for 20-50 bucks if possible. Thanks in advance,

Because its a joint. Its not a straight run from the wheel to the rack. The rubber flexes to accomodate the pitch angle difference.
Deleted awaiting other responses. Is the rubber really assisting in alignment or merely isolating (vibrations) the steering shaft from the steering wheel?

You can lust look at it while someone turns the wheel. Or jack up the front end and just spin it by hand.
Exactly, it is not perfectly aligned. It's close enough that it doesn't need a u-joint, but.
Also, imagine (the rare) height adjustable steering wheel.
I do know some install a hard or solid joint there. So, I guess it can work. I'd be interested in the life of the seal/bushing on the input of the steering box.

How close is the LS heat generator to the disk?
