Hello,
i bought a 320i e90 n46 2005 auto trans, this year (i live in Australia), with 120k km.
Lastly i had a rattling noise coming from the engine when i started the car, but it happened only once a week.
I read online that it may be due to a weak timing chain tensioner.
So I replaced it. I also took that opportunity to change VANOS solenoids seals and coolant flush.
However, this did not help, and it got worse. Now the noise can be heard every single time I start the engine. So I have the feeling that it has something to do with the timing chain or guides. Probably needs a timing chain replacement?
Again, i replaced timing chain tensioner and Vanos Soleinoids seals, so it might be the cause.
I also read that maybe i should wait 2 to 3 days for the new timing chain tensioner to be compressed by the oil (as it is currently empty)
I posted a video on YouTube where you can hear that noise.

I also read some topic related to my problem but they did not help me find a final solution.

Any updates, my n42 sounds like a diesel bmw, vanos solenoids connected or not.
Sound comes from close to the vvt motor
