I was recently leaving the grocery store and tried to start my 2013 328i X drive and the engine cranked but would not start. After the second try a message appeared on the control display "IGNITION/BATTERY MALFUNCTION CAR CANNOT BE RESTARTED CALL BMW SERVICE CENTER" This was frustrating because only 2 weeks earlier I had the dreaded "DRIVETRAIN MALFUNCTION CAR CANNOT BE RESTARTED" shutdown which ended up as a crankshaft position sensor failure. The dealer also required me to purchase a new registered battery and removed what they called a wet and corroded aftermarket tuning device and then "worked through the engine fault codes". Towing the car was a fiasco since it couldn't be shifted into neutral. So just as I was preparing for another tow and lost day I tried one more time to start the engine and it fired right up. Great and it's been starting ever since. UNTIL TODAY and it happened again, at the same store! Eventually I was able to restart the engine. I guess I need to find a new grocery store or figure out what's happening. I will replace the fuel pump relay first and beyond that I'm going to need some advice. I should probably buy a code reader...
Good idea to get a code reader. The first thing to do when you start having issue is to pull the codes. Be sure it is one that can read all BMW modules. Just post here if you need help with the codes you get.
