Hi all,
I have recently purchased a BMW E87 2007 with a N45T engine and I keep getting the P0013 and P0015 codes which still occur even after replacing the solenoid valves. It leads me onto thinking someone has did a bad job timing the chain and it requires to be done by someone more capable. Has anyone ever came across an issue like that and has successfully fixed it on this engine?
P0013 - "B" Camshaft Position Actuator "A" Control Circuit/Open Bank 1
P0015 - "B" Camshaft Position - Timing Over-Retarded Bank 1
Thanks!
The P0013 means that the electrical circuit between the engine computer (DME in BMWspeak) is open. That means there’s a wiring fault between the DME and the oil control valve for the exhaust VANOS. That could be the cause of the P0015 code. Check the electrical connector at the oil control valve to make sure it’s clean and tight. Use an electrical contact cleaner or isopropyl alcohol to thoroughly clean both the engine e harness connector and the calve’s connector. Visually inspect the male pins and the female sockets.
Go to www.realoem.com and enter the last 7 characters of your car’s vehicle identification number. Hit enter and bookmark the page. Scroll down to engine and then cylinder head VANOS. It’ll show you where the exhaust oil control valve is located.
Hi, thank you for the quick answer. Could this maybe be a problem with timing as the car idles perfectly and if it had a wiring fault with something like this surely it would not idle as well?
I hardly think it’s timing. If the engine idles ok then the timing us likely fine.
Hi, I have checked the wiring and should the vanos intake solenoid connector generate a fault code if it gets disconnected? As the exhaust solenoid connector when disconnected shows a P0010 fault and the vanos solenoid intake connector when disconnected doesn’t show any fault codes. Also how can I check if the connectors are working correctly and delivering sufficient power for them to operate correctly?
Also just realised, when unplugging the exhaust vanos solenoid I get a p0010 message which is for the intake solenoid could the wires maybe be swapped?
Also, one more issue is that when the car is shut off the compression from the engine is pushed out through the air filter creating a big thump noise.
For your last post, that’s normal.
I’m not familiar with your engine. Are the solenoids very close together? It’s odd that unplugging the intake solenoid doesn’t throw a code. Check the engine harness connectors for the solenoids. They may be slightly different to prevent swapping.
Yeah the solenoids are close together it's an N45T engine from 2007. It does seem weird as the engine never made that thump noise before. Any idea where to locate the engine harness and what to look for? Thanks for all your help I appreciate you so much!

Follow the connectors’ wires. I’m wondering if the harness is under the black plastic engine cover.
Hi, i went through all of the wires today and nothing seemed to be faulty to or look like it needed servicing also whenever I unplug one of the sensors it throws up a code which leads me on to thinking all of the connectors and sensors are fine.. I am literally lost on what’s causing the problem... it might be relating to a the issue however the oil +1L keeps coming up and disappearing one drive I have low oil another it’s on max and it never seems to settle I did add the additional 1L btw.
One more thing to say is that in November the car had a chain change and I feel like it was poorly done due to markings on the crankshaft and other marks around the engine... I’ve heard that even a 1-2 tooth difference can cause issues like this.
Ahhh, another piece of the puzzle! Does the shop specialize in bimmers, whops, beemers (you’re in the UK)? I’d take it back and have them give it a look.
I ordered a new camshaft sensor so will give that a go and also actually plug a spare solenoid into the exhaust connector and see if it works after I turn the engine on to do a one last check. If none of this works I guess it’s a timing that is a little off...
I don’t know a lot about the shop as I only have the receipt as I bought the car in December and it was done in November and I don’t think they specialise in bimmers unfortunately and I doubt they’d even want the car back at this point so I’ll have to go to another shop to do this.
What brand is the sensor that you ordered? Never buy aftermarket sensors. They are almost always junk.
It was junk as the connector didn’t even match however, will cut through the wires on Friday and test the ones that I’ve got now. It’s weird that I’m getting a p0013 code when the exhaust vanos connector is fully functional.
I have found out that the car has a permanent fault which the person that did the timing chain thinks is the ECU... So I have basically been sold a car with a fault that will fail MOT and the sales person was insisting that it just came from BMW as a P/X car lol. Thank you so much for you help! I will proceed to contact the person that has sold the car and go on from there as I am super unhappy with the service I got provided while buying the car.
