I had a really nasty clunk that was getting worse.
I had a hell of a time getting the bottom bolts loose. A impact gun had no effect either from the bolt head side or the nut side. It took a breaker bar and some arm strength, on the passenger side I was able to use a foot too.
On the drivers side I discovered that the lower part of the shock wasn't connected to the upper part. These were Bilstein shocks and they had a extension on the rod, the drivers side had come unscrewed and hell ensued.
The passenger side came apart easily and went back together with no problems.
I will say that unless you are replacing the shock mount, leave it attached to the car. I took the drivers side out and it gave me more trouble getting it back in than it should have.
I did use new lower bolts and nuts. A lot of force is applied there, no since on cheaping out.
My extension was disconnected on my touring as well when I bought it. Odd.
Sure does drive better with them connected.
