I have a 2001 E53 3.0i, just yesterday the car suddenly stopped running right while I was a stop light, my best guess is that this is caused by a vacuum leak because of a noise I can hear resembling air leaking. The problem is very subtle unless I start the heat on the car at that point it gets much more noticeable, anybody know if my assumption is the most likely one or if it could be something else? And in any case, how can I isolate the problem? And find the actual leak?

The M-54 can develop vacuum leaks in many different places, the quickest way to find them is to get the intake smoke tested. If a shop say to spray brake cleaner or starter fluid around the motor, hang-up and try another shop. It is very dangerous to be spraying flammables around the engine compartment.
You can let them do the diagnostic work and pay them for that, or just have them replace whatever rubber boot/vacuum line that has gone bad.
