Gents,
I have a long time E24M6 customer which I have been taking care of for
years. A year or so ago, he slowly got the bug from me to turn his M6
into a track day car, for lots of canyon fun.
(The body and styling will all be on behalf of the owner)
I have a low budget to work with so everything is calculated.
My Table of contents:
- Complete drive train performance.
- Entry level Suspension.
- Simple welded half a cage.
- Weight reduction project/s.
Engine: The S38-B35 is a great engine but the amount of money I need
in order to produce 400hp or more is not cheap. This will require a complete
tear down: pistons, valves, head work, valve train, machine shop work,
my labor, list goes on and on....
So, say we have 400hp S38 on the stand and then we need all custom
and sophisticated EMS(engine management system) in order to tune
and have full control over the engine operation. This will load the bill with
another 5k-6k. (Note): In my current S38-B36 I have successfully
completed Haltech engine management project and the cost for the way
I did it was a hair under $6k. I have an ultra custom and sophisticated set up,
I went all out with the proper way to do EMS. Dyno sessions revisions
is not even part of the deal...
BMW factory spent an "Untold of time" to develop an engine management
system for great drivability and performance. From experience on my S38,
I have spent at least 1 month of taking heavy notes onto trimming the
drivability.... Revisions are all additional, renting a dyno etc..
Another major factor is time ! I did not want this project to be one
of those 6-10+ year projects...which has a dedicated spot inside
of home garage. We wanted to finish the project relatively quickly
and enjoy the car at the track, as the owner needs to improve driving skills,
yet take it the local canyon for Sunday car meets.
Why I chose S54 engine over the S38 ?
When my customer and I sat and considered all of the above, he decided that
is was absolutely worth while to chose the S54 engine and drop the S38 from
the game. Yeah, I know... the S38 it's vintage, it's love, It's cool, but bloody
expensive to add power. Not to mention very bloody time consuming...
No LS V8 swap option here. LS is a great engine which I am fan of, big power,
big cc but I decided to keep the E24 with BMW "In-line 6 Love" hi revving concept.
I know the S54 inside out and it's absolutely a piece of engineering Art !
Every single part in this engine serves a purpose. From engine block weight
savings to the double continuously variable valve timing... (which
gives a wide range of power curve)... all are invaluable to the engine. Also
S54 fuel consumption a day and night difference again due to the Vanos
System.
It has a vast light weight valve train which is designed for hi revs in mind, valves
are made from one piece special alloy and light weight, low drag rings, 11:5CR,
factory 50mm ITBs, oil squirters, large plenum made from plastic to reduce
weight, Light weight construction cyl head, factory hi flow cyl head, revs at
8000-8150rpm without any fuzz.
The G420 6-spd gear box with great ratios with hi performance in mind yet fuel
efficient with its 0.83 over drive 6th gear, meaning one can use a little taller
differential ratio. Easy to source if say it brakes or any reason it will require
replacement, they are very available everywhere.
The MSS54 is a stand alone piece of the EMS. I have proven multiple
times that S54 does not need aftermarket EMS to reach great tuning capabilities
power, yet to remain on factory drivability.
Again, to replicate the S38 to the entire package above will require a lot of funding
which the S54 has this for basically free and some !
At last, the S54 is a bit lighter than the S38 due to a shorter and narrower block.
The lighter the engine up in the front, the better the weight distribution will be.
To up the power on the S54 I picked cams from Cat-Cam intake and exhaust,
CSL light weight carbon air box with flap.
Expected power will be around 400hp using 91 crappy California pump gas.
Also, I have in mind to have second ECU (which will be tuned) on race gas 100+octane.
This should add a few more HPs.
Suspension is single adjustable Ohlins built by me and all custom valves are done by
an Ohlins Technician in SoCal I work with. I chose Ohlins because the ability to
re-valve quickly per my liking.
For now, wheels are Apex light weight but I have in mind BBS Motorsport wheels
to be installed once the car is completed.
The half roll cage is simple and welded to the chassis in order to increase rigidity,
stiffness, flexing, and safety.
Regards,
Anri

Thanks for the insight as always, Anri. Good to learn about all the factors that go into a build such as this.
Now that I've been daily-driving my 2000 M5 for over 4 years, my fantasy (if money were no object) would be to transplant an S62 into an E24 (with the 6-speed gearbox, of course). However, I'm not even sure that's even feasible, and you make a strong case for an upgraded S54. Have you ever researched an S62 transplant, or heard about it from others?
Cheers,
Paul

Just trying to keep the stock N54 running without throwing codes.
Putting an S62 into an E24/28 has been done a couple of times, and only one build E9 used the running gear of the E39.
Hey Paul,
I sow your M6 at SoCalVintage I was with Mike Ottati and
having fun there but never sow you around the car..? Then
the wagon E34M5 3.8 which is own buy Christopher K.
neded some love and had to wrench on his engine at the
show...The Wagon was sitting across of your M6.
Anyway, the S62 is not a problem to be swapped into E24.
That said makes it very nice and easy ride. When you
have torque in such a low rpm's makes the car light.
I love the S62 but its a little more money to be spent on
parts and labor to make it long lasting compare to S54.
Remember these engines are old now and will require
some attention, vanos, guides, carbon build up, sensors
are old and needs replacement list goes.
I'd say no matter that the S62 its little bit more money
compare to S54, remember always much less compare to
S38 with 400hp...put on sophisticated ems. Something
you are really getting for free when you chose S54 or S62.
I have little bit different task here with this E24M6 S54.
We need Revs for the track! S62 is not that rev happy out
of the box..One who is day to day driving and local back road
fun the S62 is a lot of fun. I mean imagine if we take from your
E39M5 only 500-600 pounds...is what E24 S62 will be.
Out of the Box you have S62 with 400hp.-420hp with tune
and solid exhaust inside E24.
S54 and S62 are great engines. One needs to understand
the purpose and use. Both have their different concept. For
the track S54 is the Winner because we need balanced car.
The S54 with 405hp at 8100rpm and lighter engine weight
up the front makes the car to turn with greater corner speed.

Anri

The S54 I sourced has 80k miles which came from M3 SMG
convertible 2005.
In order to provide 100% Warranty on my work I took the
engine all apart and perform inspection and replace few parts
needed.
The block bores looks like no pistons were ever in...literally
like brand New. The cross hatch is all present.
The Cyl head dome, valves, have no sign of any carbon build up
or poor injector performance. All cyl were burning very evenly.
Very Clean and it shows its low miles.

Yellowish color and no sign of black carbon build.
All cleaned up and ready to go. New pistons rings

When perform S54 into older BMWs the oil pan and
the oil pump must be convert to S50 style.
The S54/S38 oil pump gear are both using larger 27
count teeth as opposite of the 25 and smaller in
diameter of S50. This is because the S54/S38 do rev
higher than the S50s and thus prevents the oil pump
from cavitation. So basically hybrid pump is build.
New oil pump gear with the pump disc to ensure
fresh hi pressure.

Good points all! I agree that the S62 is not cheap to maintain the long run, mostly because all of the bits that tend to fail (like sensors!) are doubled in number. But the engine itself seems to be a reliable lump. I'm keep an eye on crankshaft bearing wear with a Blackstone oil analysis at every oil change. I'm a bit annoyed by high(ish) oil consumption due to the early piston ring design, but if I keep the car long enough maybe I'll talk to you about a ring job. :-)

Good morning, I do like your plans for the low budget e24 track car. I just bought a cheap 633 CSi and I am very tempted to build a track car out of it.
I have a '76 2002 and a '76 530i that both have many mods that have been tracked but they are also street cars but they need work again after restoring them 20 years ago.
My fun car is a 1990 f-2000 but I can't run it at many track events here in Texas. Most track events do not allow open wheel race cars.
I sure like the idea of dropping an s54 and 6-speed into the e24. I think the car would turn out fairly light if it stripped down.
I thought the CSI might have a LSD but I was changing the wheels on it yesterday and noticed that the axles turn in opposite directions. So apparently it does not have the LSD.
I'm also wondering where you will get the half cage? If possible build a second one for me, please!

Hi JDP530,
The meaning of low budget is very "General" subject and
often confused by individual souls.
Half roll-cage is build in and welded to chassis to increase
strength. The cage is not one of those which are Bolt-In
for $700.. I will need to have your car in order to build it
all custom.
There are quite a lot of challenges along the line doing
S54 6spd conversion in E24 chassis.
Hope this helps a bit.

Anri

Thanks for your response, Anri!
I may have to step down to another one of the 50 series engines, but i will need to do some study and research and see what is available where I live. I may have found mfr'd mounts to fit the 50 series engines into the E24/E28 chassis. I also found a stand-alone engine harness with OBD2 port that is suppose to fit onto these older chassis for the M52, M54,and S54, from Condor Speed Shop.
I was sort of half-kidding about the roll cage and I understand shop needs the vehicle for installation. I can probably find someone over here when I get to that point, but thanks for the offer.
Hi,
I get side tracked and pushing E24M6 engine performance
project towards completion. On my way to brake the record on
what stock S38-B35 whit Bolt-Ons can do..
I will update shortly the S54 project.
