Hi All,
I recently purchased a 2015 M135i automatic with a damaged engine. I have since replaced the engine and gearbox and reinstated the original engine ECU.
Today I had a laptop engineer who only programs BMW‘s and knew a great deal about the modules and software attend to reset and amend the VIN number withIn the EGS module as I had a VIN mismatch in the fault list. I assumed this was causing the car to be stuck in park.
The car is still stuck in park after having all the modules in the car updated and gearbox adaptations reset. But now there are no fault codes being displayed!!
can anyone offer some advise, Ive left the battery disconnected tonight in the vein hope it might help!
Brake light switch. Also known as a 3 way switch - brake lights / gear selector release / cruise cancel.
They go bad and if car was in accident, the jab of the pedal along with supplemental braking activation may have caused an unregistered fault. Highly coincidental, but not without merit. Cheap part, worth checking.
Do you get the little message or image on dash with selector showing how to engage drive? If not seeing that message, then brake switch may be cause.

Thanks for the reply.
If I do not press the brake pedal or hold the button on the side of the gear shifter (Sorry I cant remember the correct name) a warning appears on the dash asking for either one to be pressed. And the brake lights are working correctly. Is there another method to check the brake switch functionality?
My thinking is the brake switch must be working correctly as the warning appears when the pedal is not pressed and I try to select a gear.
It is a 3 way switch and cheap. I have seen lights work but not other functions. But based on what you described above, the module is not seeing the “triggers to allow car to go in gear”
If foot is on brake and you see no message, does selector go into reverse or D ?? If so, then it is an internal or mechatronics issue with the trans. The shifter is purely an electronic selector. All internal action is servo driven.
Where are you located?
