Hi guys, long time reader, first time poster...
It's time to retire my trusty E39 540i after 9 years of trouble free / dealer free (DIY serviced) driving.
An F01 740i is just about in my price range now, and I'm curious as to whether I can expect the same low fuss DIY maintenance from the turbo I6, as per the old 4.4 N/A V8??
(I'd love a 750, but there seem to be so many more tales of woe and expensive repairs on that engine, compared to the 6!)
I am hoping to get some perspective from 740i owners who do their own servicing/repairs, and whether you would recommend it to a novice home mechanic...?
I'm also interested in any thoughts on the N54 vs N55 with regards to both performance and DIY serviceability?
Ps, I don't buy into the old adage that if you cant afford servicing you shouldn't buy the car... if I did, I would never have bought the E39, and wouldn't even know what I'd missed! I'm happy to roll the dice if it's a car/engine that's generally known for being reliable.

Normal aspirated 6 clyinder would be cheaper to maintain than a turbo, but I think a turbo would be cheaper to maintain than the v8, since you had an e39 you know what your in for
I would actually prefer a newer BMW with an n/a engine, but have resigned myself to getting a turbo....
