Hi.... in my opinion ... don't sell the E83 short ... an older low mileage well maintained X3 would serve well for this planned purchase.
The E83 2004 to 2006 has the M54 inline-6 non-turbo (both the 2.5i and 3.0i) engine which is time-tested and proven to be relatively bullet-proof and reliable. That engine has its own litany of little maintenance quirks but once the various engine oil leaks are taken care of it is a strong and very reliable engine. Mine has 250,000 kilometers on the odometer and many more years of expected service.
The newer vehicles have the new tech like USB charger ports and backup cameras.... but I still have much greater confidence in non-turbo power pushing a vehicle on real non-runflat tires.
Don't get me wrong.... I still have the fantasy of driving a new M40i (a friend of my wife has one)... but I could buy a dozen good E83 models for the asking price on the new M40i
... forty-three years of driving before I get behind the wheel of a BMW .... and I am thinking, "why did it take me so long?"
... and then after another 4 years I can't believe that I have two of them !!
