    5speed Getrag revamp

Hello all! Got the transmission out of the car, and I’m not sure what all it needs. It does not appear to leak, I took the time to scrub most of the surface grime off the top. I’m going to replace the slave cylinder on it, but what else should I do? I didn’t see how to change the fluid in my Haynes, only how to overhaul. If I should I overhaul it, would I be better taking it to a shop?

    Cool

Usually change front and back seals- input-output shaft seals , shifter rod seal and seals on the speedo drive. On mine the transmission oil inlet is on the right side toward the back and drain on the bottom in the back end, mine came with large Allen screws changed them over to a bolt for ease of service , a newer BMW number, upgrade so as to speak.

If your going to change out the rear output shaft seal need a puller and a thin 30 mm deep socket to remove the transmission drive flange to get too the cover and remove it too change the gasket and seal. Torque on the cover bolts and on the transmission drive flange are in specifications. Care with the cover bolts they may not be the same size and same size should be put back into the same hole from which it came.

    You have a 83 thus a Getrag 240 5 speed, 80-82 is Getrag 245 5 Speed.

My transmission appears to have a hole at the top of the bell housing, vertical rather than horizontal like the bolt holes. Does something go here? am I missing a component or is it just open for breathing? Also, for the transmission to slide in, i had to angle it a bit, and use the bolts to fully draw it together to the Engine, is this normal or should i be concerned? And if anyone knows how to tell if it takes ATF or gear oil i'd love to hear it, I can't find any labels that people use to determine that other than the 245 model number on the back.

Take a picture of it and post it here, there is a hole on top of the bell housing that is used to time the motor. The transmission fluid is GL4, Pennzoil Synchromesh Transmission fluid GL-3 will get the job done $6 per quart at NAPA and $9 at autozone. GL4 is specifications , GL3 is now an api inactive designation. GL4 is like 3 times the price of GL3, GL3 has limited availability.
