what the modern replacement for the M10 dipstick? The rubber is all hard and isn’t secure in the tube.

M10 dipsticks had several different design variations over the years. If your friend has the one with the dual-clamped rubber hose section, as found on earlier 02s, the easiest thing would be to replace just the rubber section. My 76 has a solid bent tube pressed into the block (no rubber section), but it’s too big in diameter to fit the dipstick hole in the earlier blocks. Later M10 dipsticks as found on the 3-series (E21/E30) are too short in an 02 - due to oil pan differences.
I’m not so sure there’s a “modern replacement”.
