I've got my '94 325is and am looking to reinforce my rear subframe with plates welded in. Basically, I've never welded, did too much research, got worried, called shops, terrible prices, just moved to a new area and don't know any good shops since I've always worked on my own car. I'm not sure how I feel about buying a $100 harbor freight welder and trying to do this as my first welding job.. Does anyone know of a good place to get this job done well? Or maybe someone is able to do this themselves should I properly pay them?
*If this question is in the wrong place, please let me know, this is the first time I've posted on this forum.
Thanks!
You need a MIG welder with gas to do the work properly. HF $100 welder won't quite cut it. It is not an impossible job to stitch weld enforcements (if there are no cracks or tears to fix first), but I would not do it as my first ever welding job and certainly not without proper shop space. The concern is also how to prevent rust after the welding has removed the protective coating between the layers of sheet metal.
It is really too bad especially so many E46s are out there with this problem.
