Nope - this hasn't been the "current" 8 series forum since 1996

Went to the LA Auto Show yesterday and finally sat in one. I think this is the first time I've even seen one in person. They are as unimpressive as the pictures show. Once inside, it feels a little familiar as far as some of the lines, but just goes to show how classic the E31 style is. It can never be replicated, apparently even by BMW itself.

Exactly! Finally saw one up close & personal at Cars & Coffee San Clemente and thought the same thing.

I haven't actually seen one in the flesh yet but my impression from pictures is that it looks like a 6 series but bigger. Honestly, not a fan of modern BMW designs in general and when the new 8 series was revealed it was disappointing. It doesn't do the original 8 any justice in my opinion.

The prototype was nicer and a little better in line with the original 8 series, the production version is a 6 series as pretty much everyone agrees until they see the badge.
here's the concept version, sharper front end and a little more original 8 from the rear as well.

The only reason they called that an 8-series was so they could charge more than they did for the 6-series.

Congrats to new 8 owners for your new car and new board! Sadly I can hardly afford to keep my old 8er looking sharp, so I don't see a new one in my future (if I am still alive, maybe the 3rd round or 8s!).

You are exactly right. And guess what?!? It backfired. Sales are horrible, and the 8 is going to be discontinued by 2021 or 2022. The 8 series gran coupe may stick around if it sells well enough.

The saddest part of them discontinuing this one is that it makes the chances of them coming back and doing it right in the future virtually zero.

No one is buying large 2 door coupes anymore. It doesn't make financial sense to build a product no one will buy.

For the money, I’d buy a super car. I don’t consider the new 8 as one. Prototype is nicer cause it looks more original like how the e31 use to look. The new production one looks like any other new car out there so people cant justify paying so much for it.

Well, I must disagree with the majority sentiment. Coming from an SL, I appreciate the extra room without going to a "birth control" sedan. The performance is amazing with the exception of the squealing M-sport brakes. I am happy in all other regards.bmw2.jpg

I've got to chime in after seeing the new 8 Gran Coupe in the flesh, so this isn't as much a reflection on the coupe coupe. I've owned several BMWs since my new and barely affordable '74 2002 days, so I'm kind of old school but appreciate new designs. However I've found it takes me about a year to appreciate them after they hit the market. I've been pretty critical of many but not the 8 Gran Coupe. When the 318/20 came out as a replacement to my 2002 I wasn't sure, but it grew on me. As I could afford more in life I eventually moved to a few 5 series cars (6's & V8's) but nearly each new design kind of put me off for a while. Now I'm kind of bored with the overall 5 design and am looking for something new and "different" but not a 7. I thought about Porsche Pano and even Merc AMG E53 but couldn't excited about their looks. This car hits the mark in spades for a guy like me. Some BMW's look great out of the gate but mostly I seem to get to liking their looks more so over time. It's taken time for me to get to this realization so when the new 8 came out my initial reaction mirrored most of the above until I saw it in person. I love the design although it's BIG for what I'd normally be driving but things change as we age. I'm finally a bit excited about a car again. .....However I never warmed to the Bangle butt 7.

I'll add my 2 cents here in defence of the G15 M850i xDrive. In the last 50 years I've had, in this order, an 1802, 525, 318, 318iS, E30M3, Z3M Rdstr, E90 330dxD, Z3M Coupe, E90M3, F30 335dxD, and now the G15. I traded the E90M3 in for the G15 after swearing I'd never sell that car. I am 73, the M3 had an Akropovic exhaust, and was a thrill to hear and drive, but maybe I've grown up now as I found it to loud and harsh. I drove a new G15 last summer, thought it a nice car, extremely fast, but also quiet when just driving around. Six months later I saw a demo with 7600km, and started to negotiate. Two months ago, we came to agreement and I couldn't be happier. I think it looks great, sounds great, and can still get to 100kmph in 3.7 seconds if I need to. I still have the Z3M Rdstr and F30d when I feel like driving something else.
