What does the E** mean?

I don't know how else to ask this. I just got a 2007 BMW 328xi. This is my first BMW and as I am diagnosing issues with the car, I see there are other designations people refer to like E95 or something similar. What does that mean?

As an example, when I try to enter the forums here at bimmerforums, I select the 3 series area. Then, I select the 2006-2012. All of the E numbers appear. I was trying to add a screencap to the post as an example, but the only option given is to add via URL and I don't have a hosting solution I can use. So, any info for this new guy is much appreciated.
